Your Own Worst Enemy

The Social Comparison Trap

The start of a new school year is often painted as a time of fresh starts and exciting opportunities. While that’s undoubtedly true for many, it can also be a minefield of social comparison. Whether you're returning to a familiar environment or stepping into a completely new one, the pressure to fit in and measure up can be overwhelming.

Social comparison is a natural human tendency, but it can take a toll on our mental health. Seeing what others seem to have – a thriving social life, effortless academic or athletic success, or a “perfect” body – can make us feel inadequate. It can also increase feelings of anxiety and depression, decrease body image satisfaction, and contribute to academic/athletic burnout. This is especially true during those formative years when we’re still figuring out our identity, but it's important to remember that everyone is on their own unique journey.

Tips for Overcoming Social Comparison

  • Focus on Yourself: Remind yourself of your personal goals and achievements. What have you accomplished in the last year? What are you excited to learn this year? Shifting your attention inward can help boost your self-esteem.

  • Challenge Negative Thoughts: When you find yourself comparing yourself to others, challenge those thoughts. Are they accurate? Are they helpful? Often, our perceptions are skewed, and reality is different.

  • Build Supportive Relationships: Surround yourself with people who uplift and encourage you. A strong support system can make a world of difference. Also, reach out for help with the comparison voice or inner critic becomes too loud.

  • Practice Self-Compassion: Be kind to yourself. Everyone experiences setbacks and struggles. It's okay to not be perfect.

  • Limit Social Media: Social media can be a breeding ground for comparison. Consider taking a break or being mindful of how it makes you feel. It is also helpful to follow other people who have a supportive online presence and who may represent you or be on a similar journey as you.

Remember, your worth isn't determined by how you compare to others. You are enough as you are. Focus on your own journey, celebrate your successes, and don't be afraid to seek support when needed!
